Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to the second half of our Autumn term. The children have settled incredibly well into the Year 1 routines and Miss Robinson and I have been amazed with the work they have produced.
Please send your child’s school diary in every day. These can be used to pass messages on between home and school and also records the books which children have read.
Reading books will be changed every Monday and Thursday if an extra book change is needed. Your child will receive 2 books. The ‘My Book’ will be a book matched to the phonics sounds being covered in class that week. The aim of this book is to boost your child’s fluency when reading aloud and encouraging them to segment and blend words. Once your child has read, it is also important to ask some questions to ensure they have understood events in the text. Please see the example VIPERS questions in the front of the school diary. An ‘Our Book’ will also be given which the children choose themselves from our class library. This should be read alongside an adult and aims to boost children’s interest and love of reading.
Children are to bring their bottles in on a Monday and keep them in school all week. They can take them home again on a Friday to be washed over the weekend.
We are fortunate to have beautiful grounds at Ovingham CE First School and we use them at every possible opportunity, whatever the weather! We ask that children have a pair of wellies or sturdy outdoor shoes that are kept in school for these occasions.
We are very lucky to have our Wednesday PE session delivered by the NUFC Foundation. We also have a short PE session on a Tuesday afternoon. As we will be using the outdoor areas for PE sessions, please ensure your child has some extra layers like hoodies and jogging bottoms. Children should bring their PE kits on a Monday and take them home on a Friday.
Last year we started our Forest School lessons which the children really enjoyed! This year, children will have a forest school sessions once every half term. On these days, children can come into schools dressed in outdoor clothes and must have a sturdy pair of shoes and coat too as we will be outside whatever the weather. We will confirm these dates closer to the time.
We are really excited to see some more brilliant work from our Year 1 class this half term!
