Intent, Implementation and Impact
We aim for all children to reach their scientific potential and develop characteristics that support their journey in becoming great scientists. Our scientists will:
- develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
- develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
- are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future
At Ovingham CE First School, science is taught as discrete units but the use of science is encouraged to support learning across all curriculum areas and is linked to class topics where possible, ensuring learning is relevant and meaningful for every scientist in our school. We use STEM Learning Solutions scheme of work to ensure coherent curriculum coverage in each class and a clear progression of scientific knowledge and skills across each year group.
Teaching takes place in whole class groups where new scientific processes and concepts are introduced through real, practical experiences, stimulating scientific enquiry and encouraging children to find their own answers to questions and engage in their own scientific journey. Our scientists design experiments, analyse data, create tables and graphs and research unfamiliar concepts in order to develop their knowledge and understanding of the world around them and create detailed conclusions about a particular topic.
Themed weeks such as Careers Week and STEM Week are used to raise the profile of science and inspire children to explore a profession relating to this area. Visiting scientists encourage children to engage with the subject further and understand how science is changing and enhancing our lives each day.
Our Enchanted Wood area is used to inspire young scientists and provides children with a natural space to develop their own individual interests in the subject. This is used all year round and children are encouraged to explore our outdoor environment whatever the weather.
Pupil’s science books demonstrate that scientific skills and knowledge develop and improve over time and children take pride in their own development. Our scientists understand the role of science in the world around them and having scientists in school has raised the profile of the subject and aspirations of the children.
