Reception

Happy New Year! I hope you have all had a fantastic break and are looking forward to the year ahead.  

 

Here are a few reminders about the routines in Reception:

  •  Reading books are changed on a Monday and Thursday. Please let us know when you have finished with a book and we will get you a new one.
  • PE bags should come in on a Monday and remain in school all week.
  • All uniform should be labelled, including coats, shoes and PE kits.  This is very important as clothes do end up on the wrong bodies during PE!
  • Please let us know if your child comes home with clothing that isn’t theirs. We can then get it sorted as soon as possible!

Our topics

We focus on the interests of the children and they have decided to learn about toys.  Here we will concentrate on how different toys work and compare toys from past and present. We will also create our own toys to sell in our Toy Shop. If you have access to any interesting toys from the past it would be fantastic if we could have a look at them in school! We promise to look after them and return them in one piece. J

We will then explore different forms of transport and again compare transport from past and present. We will explore the properties of different materials and think about the most suitable materials to use when creating our own forms of transport.

The children are also very eager to learn about dinosaurs! Here we will explore the names of different types of dinosaurs, what they ate, what they looked like and the environment they lived in. We are also going to create our own dinosaur dance which will be shared with you all on Tapestry!

Literacy

We love to approach Literacy through a range of stories and are currently reading ‘Duck in the Truck’ with a focus on transport. The children will be encouraged to segment words in order to read and write labels, captions and sentences and will create their own character descriptions, missing posters, letters, stories, instructions and posters. We will also explore writing in our outdoor area using chalk and natural materials.

We listen to the children read at least once a week and will let you know how your child is getting on. Please read with your child as much as possible as it makes a huge difference to their confidence and reading ability. It is very important that the children understand what they are reading so do please question them about what is happening on each page.

Maths

It is crucial that children understand the value of a number rather than just recognising it as a numeral. As a result we focus greatly on problem solving and reasoning in Reception and always encourage the children to explain their ideas when giving an answer. For example, understanding that the blue lunch choice with 10 votes is more popular than the red lunch choice with 5 votes because 10 is larger than 5. This term we will continue to solve problems involving numbers up to 15 and work on finding 1 more and 1 less mentally.

The children will also take part in lots of activities involving length, height, weight and capacity and be encouraged to order measurements from lightest to heaviest and shortest to longest. We will also be exploring a range of 3D shapes and their properties. Weekly updates will be provided via Tapestry on how to support your child further at home.

Outdoor Learning

This term we will continue to explore the outdoor area to develop our understanding of the world around us. We will be using our two and three-wheeled scooters/bikes to develop gross motor skills and create our own obstacle courses to complete. We will also look for signs of winter and think about what happens to our environment during different seasons.

Trips

Now that the children are settled we will be taking part in more trips this term. This will include a trip to the Great North Museum and possibly Centre For Life. More information will be provided nearer the time. We will also be exploring our local environment and looking at how Ovingham has changed over the years.

Assessment

In Reception we use ‘Development Matters in Early Years’ to plan, support and assess learning. At this point in the year we are focusing on aspects from 40-60months and the Early Learning Goals however all children learn and develop at their own speed so other age bands may also be used. Please let me know if you would like more information about this.
