Class One

Dear Parents and Carers,

Happy New Year to you all. I hope you all had a great half term. We are looking forward to the next term in Year 1 and we are excited to see the amazing work which the children will produce. Below are all of the key pieces of information.

Miss Moorhead is our Year 1 class teacher and Miss Robinson is our teaching assistant.

School Diaries

Please send your child’s school diary in every day. These can be used to pass messages on between home and school.

Reading Books

Reading books will be changed every Monday and on Thursday if an extra book change is needed. Your child will receive 2 books. The ‘My Book’ will be a book matched to the phonics sounds being covered in class that week. The aim of this book is to boost your child’s fluency when reading aloud and encouraging them to segment and blend words. Once your child has read, it is also important to ask some questions to ensure they understand events in the text. Please see the example VIPERS questions in the front of the school diary.

An ‘our book’ will also be given which is a book which the child chooses themselves from our class library. This should be read alongside an adult and aims to boost children’s interest and love of reading.

Children will continue to use Spell Shed for their Phonics homework. A new task will be uploaded every Friday and will focus on a new sound which has been taught that week.

Each week, a reading focus will be provided using the VIPERS framework. We would appreciate your support in encouraging children to discuss the text they have read using the question prompts.

Water Bottles

Children are to bring their bottles in on a Monday and keep them in school all week. They can take them home again on a Friday to be washed over the weekend.

Wellies/Outdoor Shoes

We are fortunate to have beautiful grounds at Ovingham CE First School and we use them at every possible opportunity, whatever the weather! We ask that children have a pair of wellies or sturdy outdoor shoes that are kept in school for these occasions.

We are very lucky to have our Wednesday PE session delivered by the NUFC Foundation. These sessions are based outside so children will need their outdoor PE kit. Please feel free to send in extra layers as we will aim to use the outdoor spaces wherever possible.

We also have a PE session on a Tuesday afternoon. This will be a dance session this half term so children will need some indoor shoes for these lessons.

Please send your child’s PE kit in on a Monday and we will send them back home at the end of the week.

Forest School

Last year we started our Forest School lessons which the children really enjoyed! This year, children will have a forest school sessions once every half term. On these days, children can come into schools dressed in outdoor clothes and must have a sturdy pair of shoes and coat too as we will be outside whatever the weather. We will confirm these dates closer to the time.
